Most often, employers are looking for young specialists with at least one year of work experience. Where can a university graduate who has just received a diploma get it? We asked Elizaveta Eremina, a student at the Moscow City Pedagogical University and a silver medalist at the “ I am a Professional ” Olympiad, to share her experience and talk about how she looked for a job during the pandemic and what helped her find her dream job.
How did you start looking for a job?
It so happened that I graduated from the university last year and the whole pandemic story affected me directly. At that moment, I decided to participate in the Olympiad "I am a professional", the competition was exactly in my specialization - I studied to be a speech therapist on page seo service at Moscow State Pedagogical University. I got a chance to show my knowledge and prove that my 4 years of studying at the university were not in vain.
As a result, I managed to reach the final, become a silver medalist and receive bonuses from the "I am a professional" Olympiad. This included an award, and an analysis of my resume, and career consultations with representatives of several companies. I was also taken on a paid internship at the Social Development Complex. The internship lasted 3 months, after which I was invited to a permanent job. Now I am on the staff of the City Psychological and Pedagogical Center as a speech therapist-defectologist.

What difficulties did you encounter while looking for a job?
The first thought of all students when they graduate from university is “Oh my God, I have no experience!”, despite the fact that I and many of my fellow students participated in various events, competitions, and developed basic skills for our future profession.
Of course, I was most worried about the fact that I didn't have enough knowledge and professional competencies, but every graduate thinks about this, even if they have a red diploma. The hardest part was finding vacancies: finding recruiting sites, writing a resume, choosing suitable options, sending a lot of applications, getting rejections and getting upset. In this matter, it is important to be patient and not despair when something does not go according to plan.
What problems did you encounter when writing your resume?
Of course, there were problems at the very beginning, for example, what to write in the hobbies section - what are my hobbies? The university held job fairs for graduates, there were master classes on how to write a resume correctly. I also told about the career advice I received from a recruiter at the "I am a professional" Olympiad, where I was advised on how to best format a resume, and pointed out the mistakes. I wrote a resume on different portals and these recommendations helped me a lot.
Not every employer is aware of all the competitions and projects, but did participation in the Olympiad help with employment?
Yes, absolutely. Not only was it an experience that emotionally encouraged me and helped me to be sure that after university there was something to strive for. The Olympiad also gave me the opportunity to participate in the Russian Presidential Grant Competition, which I won and am now a grant recipient, which also impressed my supervisor.
